The rim/pu moulding facility at AP hollings has been used to produce a variety of components for customers, requiring injection tool quality without the high tooling cost.
Rim tooling is low cost and the main considerations when moulding polyurethane, is the venting and clamping to withstand some intool expansion loads, at the reaction of the two part mix of basically polyol and polyisocyanate.
Aluminium tools are machined and built at aph and our customer wanted pu wig stands made. From supplied cad 2 sets of clam tool were cnc machined on one of our 5 axis machines. The tool was in two parts. One for the head form, in three sizes and another for the weighted neck stand.
The weighted neck stand had a steel base plate into which was mounted a centre mandrel, with exposed taper which located the headform. These metal components for overmoulding in the pu tool were made at APH.
These metallic parts were mounted onto features within the tool to allow the flow of reacting pu foam when the tool was closed. After the foam was cured, the part was withdrawn from tool, some flashing carefully removed before the customers name and size of head were screen printed. Packed and shipped. Repeat orders have been regularly received from a very satisfied customer.
